Advanced DAX Training by Matt Allington (Microsoft MVP - Power BI)

Demystifying DAX – Live Advanced DAX Training

Best in Class DAX Training by Power BI Expert Matt Allington

Face to Face live training is currently not practicable given the current troubles around the world with Coronavirus.  The good news is that Excelerator BI has now converted this live Intermediate-Advanced DAX Training course and turned it into a live, instructor led, online training course.   And as a bonus, it is therefore more broadly available to anyone to attend from anywhere in the world.

Why Should I Choose this Course?

This 1 Day Intermediate-Advanced DAX training course was developed and is delivered by Matt Allington who is a Microsoft MVP (Power BI) and author of the best selling book Supercharge Power BI. The training covers the different areas of DAX and data modelling in Power BI to solve the real world business problems. Matt uses his extensive knowledge of DAX and his tremendous experience in training and consulting to make the training practical and relevant. This course covers the more complicated intermediate to advanced principles of data modelling using Power BI and the DAX language.

Who Should Attend?

This is not a beginners’ course.  This course is ideal for people who already have a base understanding of DAX and Data Modelling, and who have had 6-18 months experience using Power BI (and/or Power Pivot for Excel).  If you have little or no understanding of Power BI or DAX, you should consider attending the introductory 2-day course “Power BI for the Business Analyst” first, then get some real world experience and practice before coming back and attending this one day intermediate to advanced DAX and data modelling course.

So is it Intermediate, or Advanced?

Good question, I’m glad you asked.  Most people with some experience in DAX think they need advanced training.  But what constitutes “advanced” really depends on your perspective.  Matt Allington has more experience training people on DAX than most other trainers in the world.  This course covers what you need to know to go to the next level.  Once you become competent in the concepts covered in this intermediate to advanced training, you will be well placed to incrementally learn by launching from the solid foundation covered in this course. Whether it is intermediate or advanced depends on your perspective.

Course Content

This one-day training course enables you to move from the basics of DAX and data modelling to a level where you can solve problems for much of your current and future reporting needs. Before you can become proficient in the DAX language, you simply must understand how the Power BI/Power Pivot database engine works.  This course will teach you what you need to know about that, including:

  • The difference between a model based BI tool and other reporting based BI tools.
  • An in depth review of relationship types and their behaviour.
  • In depth coverage of evaluation contexts and context transition.
  • The true role of the CALCULATE() function.
  • Thinking differently about functions such as FILTER() so you can deeply understand how they work.
  • Iterator functions vs aggregator functions e.g. SUMX() vs SUM().
  • Virtual filter patterns (where you don’t need relationships at all).
  • Custom time intelligence patterns.
  • Writing complex formulas using the VAR syntax.
  • Other DAX patterns to solve business problems.

At the end of the day you will be well on your way to becoming a Power BI ninja and expert data analyst.

All participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Course Format

This course primarily consists of lectures and live demos where you listen, ask questions and learn from an expert.  There is plenty of opportunity to participate and ask questions to clarify your understanding.  Participants should still prepare their laptop so it is running the latest version of Power BI Desktop so they can complete some practice exercises during the training.

Prerequisite knowledge

At a minimum, participants should have some real world experience writing DAX formulas and loading their own data into Power BI for ideally 6 – 18 months. It is not necessary to have an in depth knowledge of how the formulas work – that is what will be covered in the course.  So if you have written formulas and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t, and you don’t know why or which of the two you will get, then this is the course for you.
